Introductory Grad Meeting

Cindy had her first grad meeting with all of her fellow students in the Popular Literature concentration in the School of English. Dr. Darryl Jones, the director of her major, gave a short and sweet speech giving an introductory to the classes and handed out a few reading packets. Then it was of to the pub!

The pub was called Kehoe's and is located just off of Grafton Street. It's a quaint little place with a relaxed atmosphere. Here we got to know a little about the fellow students and ask a few questions that we had. We were wondering where to buy food at since all of the stores we had been to were very tiny and had a very small inventory. Colin suggested that we try the basement of the department store Dunnes which supposed had a larger variety of foods. And lo and behold, it did! How weird is it to have a grocery store underneath a basement. More on this topic in the Different Things section. All in all, we had a wonderful time!
Walking tour of Dublin

We had the chance to take a walking tour of Dublin for international students that was held by Trinity College Dublin. Our tour guide was Dutch, and we met people from DC, Spain, Chile and Russia. Along the tour we saw Oscar Wilde's childhood residence, Temple Bar, Merrion Square, St. Stephen's Green, Grafton Street, Christ Church Cathedral, and Dublin Castle. It was fantastic! And of course, like all other Irish social gatherings, we ended the tour with a visit to Cassidy's Pub where we shared a nice cold pint of Gunniess.
Crann Interview

Two weeks ago I got an email from the school saying that I made it on a "short" list of interviewees that they wanted for the CRANN Technical Officer position. I had totally forgotten about my application. I had sent it well over 6 weeks prior, before we even left the US. This was an excellent opportunity for me, not only because I hadn't heard from any other employer, but because this is something I wanted to do.

The interview was scheduled for the 14th of October. That means I had a chance to wear my new snazzy suit and pea coat (which I had previously worn at the Morrissey wedding). The 14th was a rainy day. Cindy wasn't feeling well from a cold but wanted to go with me anyway. I arrived early and took a seat in the waiting room. Remembering all I had practiced with Cindy, I felt I was ready for any question they could throw at me. Sitting in that room, I concentrated on being Present; to clear my mind and work on my orrah. I wanted to give off a good energy field; to give that feeling of comfort and confidence. There was no need for further recital of my lines; I already knew them.

The girl came in and invited me to a back room. I walked in and there was a table set for 4. A panel; oh man. I had never been in front of a panel before, but no worries. It's all the same. I shook each individuals hand making sure to be firm and confident. Sitting in the chair, making sure to be upright and slightly leaning forward, I began to concentrate on the individual asking the questions. I had noticed one person from the CRANN Brochure I had read the night before; Dr. Boland, the director of CRANN. He was the one asking the blunt of the questions, from why I was fit for the job to how I converted the Briggs and Straton to fuel injection. I believe another interviewer was also a researcher, one was an HR rep, and another a safety coordinator. All in all, I think I did very well. I do not think I could have done any better other than slowing down my speech. Thank goodness for Cindy wanting to practice the questions (what would I do without her)!
The Good News!

Tuesday night I received an email from the a lady in HR stating that she tried to call me on the number listed on my CV but couldn't get through. My number was no longer valid for I had submitted my CV before we left for Ireland and before I canceled my cell number. She wanted to me to call her back. Boy was I nervous. I didn't know what to expect. I know I was on the "short" list of interviewees, but calling me back the same day as the interview? What could it mean? Did they get back to me because I wasn't fit for the job? Or was it because they liked me? Only time could tell

Wednesday morning Cindy and I went to campus for her morning class and I made the //phone call//. She said that I interviewed well and that I was being offered the job! Yes! No more nervousness; no more worrying if I could stay in the country; no more worrying if I was going to like my job. It was all over. Now all I have to do is fill out the required paperwork for the work permit, send in my references, and satisfy the medical requirements.

The great thing about this job is that I'm on the Trinity College Dublin campus with Cindy and it's in the field of Research and Development. I believe this will open many opportunities for me in the future, even though it's not an actual research position. Being a lab technician will give me the experience with the lab equipment, lab settings, procedures, and not to mention references. Hopefully this will guide me in the direction for my Masters degree; which I still don't know what I want to concentrate on. Anyway, this is a great opportunity for me and both of us are really excited for it!
Job Celebration Dinner

This week was a big week for us. I had an interview on campus for a Technical Officer position for the CRANN which stands for Center for Research on Adaptive Nanostructures and Nanodevices. The position entails supporting the researchers and the equipment at the CRANN. the CRANN is one of two major research facilities that specialize in nanotechnology. The interview with a panel of four went well and Wednesday I got a call offering me the position. We are so stoked! This is a great opportunity for me to get into the field of Research and Development (R&D) and see if I like it. Now all I have to do is fill out the required paperwork and wait for the work permit to be processed and sent.

The news of the job offer cannot go without a proper celebration so Cindy and I decided to treat ourselves out to dinner. Along the way we took some night photos of downtown Dublin. We decided to eat at a placed called The Shack Restaurant and had some traditional Irish food which was scrumptious! The Shack is located in Temple Bar and boy is it full of tourists! We heard some authentic Irish music by a band called Mutefish and a sample of their music can be downloaded here (scroll to the bottom of the post for a streaming version). Let us know if you want to hear some more of it!
Arrival in Ireland
"What do you mean??? This is my life!"

Oh, the Irish and their so-called "rules". Apparently, rules are made to be broken in this neck of the world. Every institution one can visit here, whether it be government, academic, financial, etc. has rules, yet mysteriously... nobody abides by them. It is almost as though they make rules just to say that they exist, yet bend them or reject them altogether so that they can carry on with everyday tasks. This is not to say that they partake in dicey behavior (they are hugely into the honor system here). However, the rules they make seem to hinder them so much, that if they were to follow them nothing would ever happen. For example, we were "required" to pay for a trimester's worth of rent before moving in, yet after living here for an entire month we get a knock on the door asking if we had paid yet. What??? Yes, we have paid! Shouldn't you, the lessor, have record of this?! How did you misplace thousands of dollars, and how did nobody notice until an entire month had gone by??? What if your records are so poor that you can't find the money and make us move? This is my life you're messing with! It seems as though we are not the only foreigners who have experienced a lack of planning/organization on the part of the Irish. My classmate, Shannon, was accepted into a study-abroad program here as an undergrad. When she arrived, they didn't have a place for her to stay, even though they had invited her. They simply told her "I'm sure we'll find a spot for you to stay; I 'think' it will all work out." Think?! This is my life!!! Do you know how hard I've worked and how long I've planned to get here? I'm going to need to speak to somebody who knows, I need to hear it from the horse's mouth. Alas, lads and lasses, there is no such horse in Ireland.

Immigration Office (GRIB)

Alright, so one of the first tasks involved in becoming a student in Ireland involves registering at the Garda National Immigration Bureau (GNIB). The first thing we had to do before registering was gather the appropriate paperwork together which included a letter from the Treasurer's office stating we had paid tuition in full, a letter from the school stating that Cindy had registered at Trinity College Dublin, a bank account with money in it, a valid passport, and among other things. Just go get the bank account open took a lot of running around, let alone being qualified to register with the GNIB.

The first time we walked into the office, it was a typical "government serving the public" situation. Lines were at the door and the queue numbers were somewhere in the 500s. Forget this; we'll come back another day.

The next day we decided to show up in the opening hour, 9am. The line was now outside in the rain! We asked the person in front of us what was going on and he said that people had been lined up since 7am. This was like seeing the opening of Harry Potter! We eventually go to the front of the outside line and man handed us a queue number telling us to come back at 6 if we were a student. We then left, again.

This time we decided to show up at 5, not 6 like the man told us. Oh great, our queue number was 420 and they were in the 200s. Oh great. Sitting and waiting was now our task at hand. Eventually they go to us, 5 hours later! We were nervous with questions. Were they going to let me stay longer than a month to find a job? We just couldn't take it. The guy who helped us was really kind and helping. He gave me a 3 month stay to try and find a job and I could re-enter again for 3 months if I couldn't find one by then. The rest of the registration process went smoothly and without and glitches. It was well worth the wait.

So...apparently the Irish either don't believe in or don't know what canned food is. In all grocery stores (if you can call them that) they have two canned foods...baked beans and peas! That's it! Why those two? I would think canned corn would be at the top of the list, or string beans. Baked beans? Come on. Do you know what worst part is? The baked beans are in //tomato sauce//.

Christ Church Cathedral is the oldest medieval cathedrals in Dublin. The site was first used by the Vikings in 1038 as a ceremonial site and a cathedral was built on the grounds a few centuries later by King Henry VIII. Cindy and I first visited the cathedral during our vacation in January of 2007 and loved it. The underground catacombs were wonderful and eerie and the architecture was fabulous.

Apparently the Irish are real sticklers when it comes to banking. We tried to change Cindy's student bank account at the Bank of Ireland to a joint account so that we can both use it when we're here, but we were denied. They said that we have to open up a separate joint account but we couldn't have any debit/credit cards unless the account has been open for 6 months and it showed activity on it. What activity I ask? Deposits and withdrawals? What does that show? Our conclusion on the matter is that we'll be resorting to cash to dodge the conversion fees of our US cards.

"The company, which is privately owned, is intensely proud of the fact that it is an Irish company with a primarily Irish customer base.

The guiding principles of the company are to provide its customers with a choice of good quality products at competitive prices. These principles are encapsulated in the words "Better Value" for which Dunnes Stores has become famous.

A combination of Food, Textiles and Homewares all under one roof makes Dunnes Stores unique amongst Irish retail companies.

Customers can find a comprehensive variety of fashionable clothing for Ladies, Men and Children.

The Homeware department has a full range of items for every room in the home. The Food department sells a full range of branded and own brand products.

The "St. Bernard" brand was founded in 1956 and it remains today a byword for value in retailing.

Customers will also find product branded "Dunnes Stores" which represents the company's offer across Textiles, Homewares and Food of product equivalent to the best branded offer, but at much keener prices." -Dunnes.ie
One thing that is interesting about the Netherlands, is that you have to pay to use a shopping cart at the grocery store. The chain them together and you have to pay like a euro or something (not quite sure on the price) in order to release it. It is similar to paying for the luggage carts at airports.

!Revision history
* v1.0.8 (2007-04-12)
** Adapted to latest TiddlyWiki 2.2 Beta importTiddlyWiki API (introduced with changeset 2004). TiddlyWiki 2.2 Beta builds prior to changeset 2004 are no longer supported (but TiddlyWiki 2.1 and earlier, of cause)
* v1.0.7 (2007-03-28)
** Also support "pre" formatted TiddlyWikis (introduced with TW 2.2) (when using "in" clause to work on external tiddlers)
* v1.0.6 (2006-09-16)
** Context provides "viewerTiddler", i.e. the tiddler used to view the macro. Most times this is equal to the "inTiddler", but when using the "tiddler" macro both may be different.
** Support "begin", "end" and "none" expressions in "write" action
* v1.0.5 (2006-02-05)
** Pass tiddler containing the macro with wikify, context object also holds reference to tiddler containing the macro ("inTiddler"). Thanks to SimonBaird.
** Support Firefox 1.5.0.1
** Internal
*** Make "JSLint" conform
*** "Only install once"
* v1.0.4 (2006-01-06)
** Support TiddlyWiki 2.0
* v1.0.3 (2005-12-22)
** Features:
*** Write output to a file supports multi-byte environments (Thanks to Bram Chen)
*** Provide API to access the forEachTiddler functionality directly through JavaScript (see getTiddlers and performMacro)
** Enhancements:
*** Improved error messages on InternetExplorer.
* v1.0.2 (2005-12-10)
** Features:
*** context object also holds reference to store (TiddlyWiki)
** Fixed Bugs:
*** ForEachTiddler 1.0.1 has broken support on win32 Opera 8.51 (Thanks to BrunoSabin for reporting)
* v1.0.1 (2005-12-08)
** Features:
*** Access tiddlers stored in separated TiddlyWikis through the "in" option. I.e. you are no longer limited to only work on the "current TiddlyWiki".
*** Write output to an external file using the "toFile" option of the "write" action. With this option you may write your customized tiddler exports.
*** Use the "script" section to define "helper" JavaScript functions etc. to be used in the various JavaScript expressions (whereClause, sortClause, action arguments,...).
*** Access and store context information for the current forEachTiddler invocation (through the build-in "context" object) .
*** Improved script evaluation (for where/sort clause and write scripts).
* v1.0.0 (2005-11-20)
** initial version

Grafton Street is one of the main shopping areas in Dublin. It was one of the top 4 most expensive places in the world in terms of reality in price per square foot. It runs between St. Stephen's Green and Trinity College Dublin and is about 1/4 mile long. The street was originally a country lane and was converted to a street in 1708 by the Dawson family. The street houses places from McDonalds to Brown Thomas.

All check out clerks at grocery stores //sit down// which frankly, we agree with. It's just an odd observation, that's all.
Ok, so it took us a little while to find a grocery store that's comparable to the US, but we did. The best ones are actually in the basements of department stores such as Dunnes and Marks & Spencer. Go figure. I assume they're in the basement for energy reasons. The ground probably helps insulate the walls which helps keeps the food cooler.
Guinness.
The Irish really love to celebrate Halloween. They get all dressed up, have parades, and shoot off 4th of July caliber fireworks unprofessionally.
Quality health care that is affordable. Yes, we mean to put this under the America list. A standard doctor visit in Ireland is outrageous, and they do not practice routine preventative tests and procedures that are performed in the UK and U.S.

|Type|plugin,formatter|
|Requires||
|Overrides|'image' formatter|
|Description|extends image syntax to add optional CSS width/height values|
!!!!!Usage
<<<
Extends standard TiddlyWiki image syntax, {}, so you can specify CSS width/height values.

The extended syntax is:
>{}
>where x and y are the desired width and height of the image, specified using CSS units of measurement (e.g., px, em, cm, in, or %). Use auto for either the width or height to scale image proportionally (i.e., maintain aspect ratio). You may also calculate a CSS value on-the-fly by using //evaluated javascript//, enclosed between """""", e.g, {}.

Note: this plugin also includes enhancements to support:
*AttachFilePluginFormatters (embed image files as text-encoded tiddlers)
* ImagePathPlugin (fallback locations for missing images)
Please refer to those plugins for details...

2008.01.19 [1.1.0] added support for evaluated width/height values!!
2008.01.18 [1.0.1] code cleanup plus improved regexp for matching "(width,height)" by eliminating hard-coded recognition of [px,em,cm,in,%] CSS units. Syntax now accepts ANY values for width/height, and leaves it to the browser's CSS processing to handle any invalid values.

2008.06.11 [1.9.3] added $(...) function as 'shorthand' convenience syntax for document.getElementById()
2008.03.03 [1.9.2] corrected declaration of wikifyPlainText() for 'TW 2.1.x compatibility fallback' (fixes Safari "parse error")
2008.02.23 [1.9.1] in onclick function, use string instead of array for 'bufferedHTML' attribute on link element (fixes IE errors)
2008.02.21 [1.9.0] 'onclick' scripts now allow returned text (or document.write() calls) to be wikified into a span that immediately follows the onclick link. Also, added default 'return false' handling if no return value provided (prevents HREF from being triggered -- return TRUE to allow HREF to be processed). Thanks to Xavier Verges for suggestion and preliminary code.

"The way is long-let us go together. The way is difficult-let us help each other. The way is joyful-let us share it. The way is ours alone-let us go in love."
"Kehoe's, is a traditional Dublin Pub, located on South Anne Street just of Grafton Street. One of Dublin's busiest boozers before the advent of the superpub a decade ago, it has remained a popular bar with college students and the trendier type of Dublin punter.
The bar is decorated in the style of an old Dublin pub, with stylish wood fittings, a very narrow bar and an intimate snug at the front and a bigger snug at the back. When the owner John Kehoe died a few years ago, the bar was sold for 2.3 million punts. The new owners opened up the musty interior upstairs where Kehoe used to live, with a bar and a little parlour with comfortable seating.

The atmosphere in Kehoe's is always convivial and friendly with a chatty clientele who are not hindered by loud bar music. Their pint of Guinness is one of the best in the city and there is a full range of beers at the bar. Get there early on a weekend night, as it tends to get very busy. Best experienced on a quieter weeknight, when the relaxed and easy ambience is a refreshing contrast to the more hectic pubs around the city centre. Guaranteed to be an enjoyable experience, Kehoes is well worth a look." -dublinks.com

We offer stylish, high quality, great value clothing and home products, as well as outstanding quality foods, responsibly sourced from around 2,000 suppliers globally. We employ over 75,000 people in the UK and abroad, and have over 600 UK stores, plus an expanding international business.
We are the number one provider of womenswear and lingerie in the UK, and are rapidly growing our market share in menswear, kidswear and home, due in part to our growing online business. Overall, our clothing and homeware sales account for 49% of our business. The other 51% of our business is in food, where we sell everything from fresh produce and groceries, to partly-prepared meals and ready meals.
Now more than ever, we’re also known for our green credentials as a result of our five-year eco plan, Plan A, which will see us, amongst other things, become carbon neutral and send no waste to landfill by 2012." -Marksandspencer.com

When getting together as a group in a public setting, the Irish like to stay out as long as possible. If one only has the time to pop-in just to say "hi", this would mean making a social commitment of at least one to two hours. According to the Irish, if one can't stay for at least a couple of hours, it just isn't worth the bother. While at pubs with my classmates, anyone who is taking-off after three to four hours is met with comments such as "ohhh, leaving already?!" Here is an informal e-mail reminder of the M.Phil Graduate Reception that the department sent out (note the start and end times of the event):

All electrical outlets are the "British version" with the two prongs on the bottom and one large one at the top. The plug is so large that it takes up a lot of room on the wall. One of the good things is that each outlet has a switch that turns it on and off right next to it. I believe this switch is for both energy efficiency and safety (no shock when plugging into the wall). Another weird thing is that there are //no// outlets in the bathrooms! How are the women suppose to get all dressed up? I also believe this is for safety reasons as well.

!Description<html><a name="Description"/></html>
With the {} feature you can structure your tiddler text into separate (named) parts.
Each part can be referenced as a "normal" tiddler, using the "//tiddlerName/////partName//" syntax (e.g. "About/Features"). E.g. you may create links to the parts (e.g. {} or {}), use it in {} or {} macros etc.

Syntax:
|>|<part //partName// [hidden] > //any tiddler content// </part>|
|//partName//|The name of the part. You may reference a part tiddler with the combined tiddler name "//nameOfContainerTidder/////partName//. <br>If you use a partName containing spaces you need to quote it (e.g. {} or {Shortcut List}).|
|hidden|When defined the content of the part is not displayed in the container tiddler. But when the part is explicitly referenced (e.g. in a {} macro or in a link) the part's content is displayed.|
|<html><i>any&nbsp;tiddler&nbsp;content</i></html>|<html>The content of the part.<br>A part can have any content that a "normal" tiddler may have, e.g. you may use all the formattings and macros defined.</html>|
|>|~~Syntax formatting: Keywords in bold, optional parts in [...]. 'or' means that exactly one of the two alternatives must exist.~~|
<html><a href="javascript:;" onclick="window.scrollAnchorVisible('Top',null, event)">[Top]</a></html>

!Applications<html><a name="Applications"/></html>
!!Refering to Paragraphs of a Longer Tiddler<html><a name="LongTiddler"/></html>
Assume you have written a long description in a tiddler and now you want to refer to the content of a certain paragraph in that tiddler (e.g. some definition.) Just wrap the text with a part block, give it a nice name, create a "pretty link" (like {}) and you are done.

Notice this complements the approach to first writing a lot of small tiddlers and combine these tiddlers to one larger tiddler in a second step (e.g. using the {} macro). Using the part feature you can first write a "classic" (longer) text that can be read "from top to bottom" and later "reuse" parts of this text for some more "non-linear" reading.

<html><a href="javascript:;" onclick="window.scrollAnchorVisible('Top',null, event)">[Top]</a></html>

!!Citation Index<html><a name="Citation"/></html>
Create a tiddler "Citations" that contains your "citations".
Wrap every citation with a part and a proper name.

Example
{}

You may now "cite" them just by using a pretty link like {} or even more pretty, like this {}.

<html><a href="javascript:;" onclick="window.scrollAnchorVisible('Top',null, event)">[Top]</a></html>

!!Creating "multi-line" Table Cells<html><a name="TableCells"/></html>
You may have noticed that it is hard to create table cells with "multi-line" content. E.g. if you want to create a bullet list inside a table cell you cannot just write the bullet list
{}
into a table cell (i.e. between the | ... | bars) because every bullet item must start in a new line but all cells of a table row must be in one line.

Using the part feature this problem can be solved. Just create a hidden part that contains the cells content and use a {} macro to include its content in the table's cell.

Example
{}

Notice that inside the {} macro you may refer to the "current tiddler" using the ".".

BTW: The same approach can be used to create bullet lists with items that contain more than one line.

<html><a href="javascript:;" onclick="window.scrollAnchorVisible('Top',null, event)">[Top]</a></html>

!!Creating Tabs<html><a name="Tabs"/></html>
The build-in {} macro requires that you defined an additional tiddler for every tab it displays. When you want to have "nested" tabs you need to define a tiddler for the "main tab" and one for every tab it contains. I.e. the definition of a set of tabs that is visually displayed at one place is distributed across multiple tiddlers.

With the part feature you can put the complete definition in one tiddler, making it easier to keep an overview and maintain the tab sets.

Example
The standard tabs at the sidebar are defined by the following eight tiddlers:
* SideBarTabs
* TabAll
* TabMore
* TabMoreMissing
* TabMoreOrphans
* TabMoreShadowed
* TabTags
* TabTimeline

Instead of these eight tiddlers one could define the following SideBarTabs tiddler that uses the part feature:
{}

Notice that you can easily "overwrite" individual parts in separate tiddlers that have the full name of the part.

E.g. if you don't like the classic timeline tab but only want to see the 100 most recent tiddlers you could create a tiddler "~SideBarTabs/Timeline" with the following content:
{}
<html><a href="javascript:;" onclick="window.scrollAnchorVisible('Top',null, event)">[Top]</a></html>

!!Using Sliders<html><a name="Sliders"/></html>
Very similar to the build-in {} macro (see above) the {} macro requires that you defined an additional tiddler that holds the content "to be slid". You can avoid creating this extra tiddler by using the part feature

Example
In a tiddler "About" we may use the slider to show some details that are documented in the tiddler's "Details" part.
{}

Notice that putting the content of the slider into the slider's tiddler also has an extra benefit: When you decide you need to edit the content of the slider you can just doubleclick the content, the tiddler opens for editing and you can directly start editing the content (in the part section). In the "old" approach you would doubleclick the tiddler, see that the slider is using tiddler X, have to look for the tiddler X and can finally open it for editing. So using the part approach results in a much short workflow.

People seem to knock on your door at late hours and not seem to care. Cindy's luggage was delivered at 11pm one night and there wasn't a care in the world. I think they don't mind not because of their lack of politeness, but because of their night owl tendencies. It's not uncommon for people to be at pubs at 2am on a school/work night! Our posted quiet times for the apartment is from midnight to 9am! But Cindy and I don't mind the late ours because we're night owls anyway.

Having a true sense of respect for playing hard and sleeping in.
"Contemporary literary culture is built on a paradox: that which most people read is that which critics value least. The novels of Dan Brown, Stephen King, and Agatha Christie, for instance – to say nothing of J.K Rowling's Harry Potter books – have long attracted many more readers than the winners of prestigious prizes such as the IMPAC or Man Booker. When readers were asked to name their favorite books in a recent BBC poll, they placed Tolkien's Lord of the Rings at number 1. And yet, such popular literature receives little critical attention, and wins few major prizes. How did this curious separation of popularity and value come about?

This course offers an opportunity for the advanced study of popular literature and its strange place within modern culture. It will trace the history of such popular genres as horror, science fiction, romance, and detective fiction, and offer a comprehensive introduction to contemporary theories of the popular. Participants will also choose from a range of specialist options on particular aspects of the popular, and study research methods. This M.Phil. will provide an invaluable base for those who wish to do further graduate study, but will also appeal to those who wish to develop their critical skills and knowledge in relation to an important aspect of contemporary culture.

The School of English has a large and active cohort of research students (some 50 in the current session), and two other taught Master's courses. Participants in this new M.Phil., the only one of its kind in these islands, will be part of a long-established and vigorous academic community. A weekly staff-graduate research seminar offers a lively forum for debate and the exchange of ideas. Postgraduates of the School of English routinely go on to further research and successful careers, in the academy and other fields." -TCD

One thing we noticed is the way they world their floors in stores. In the US, we tend to have the floor you enter be called the "1rst floor", but in Ireland, they call the floor you enter the "ground floor" then the next floor up is called the "1rst floor". It's really confusing. So our question is, is if they have the basement, ground floor, 1rst floor, and 2nd floor, would they say they have 2 floors, 3 floors or 4?
